At Limavady Grammar School, our commitment to pupil success is built into the very fabric of our community. Central to this is our well-established Peer Mentoring Programme, where our senior students—known as our Learning Gurus—provide dedicated support to Year 8 and Year 9 pupils.
The programme pairs younger learners with these experienced mentors from Years 12, 13, and 14. Our Learning Gurus offer exceptional care and academic guidance, helping mentees build confidence and excel in their subjects. It’s a rewarding experience for everyone involved; it helps pupils find the joy in learning, discover effective revision strategies, and see real, thriving progress in their schoolwork.
Insights from our Gurus and Mentees:
“I enjoyed being able to meet new people and connect with the older years. The advice my Learning Guru gave me regarding revision, note-taking, and school life has been incredibly useful. This programme helped me discover which strategies work best for me—I’d definitely recommend it!”
— Jessica Allen (Year 8)
“I have loved being a Learning Guru as I’ve developed new skills in organisation and leadership. It has allowed me to help others explore revision methods early on, giving them a head start. Plus, it was great to meet new people.”
— Amina (Year 12)
“Being a Learning Guru has been so much fun over the years. This year, I worked with a Year 8 boy, and I loved teaching him the revision techniques I’ve gathered during my time at LGS. One of my favourite memories was helping him master 6-point grid references by drawing maps together! I even learned some new methods from the teachers that I’d never tried before.”
— Charlotte (Year 14)
“I loved mentoring because my Guru made studying fun and really helped me. She was so kind! My favourite part was definitely the reward at the end—it was delicious!”
— Ben (Year 8)
“Anna and I have really enjoyed working through schoolwork problems together. We’ve revised subjects like History—using flashcards and practice tests to learn about the Black Plague—and even tackled Maths questions that went beyond what she had already learned in class! We’ve gained skills in teaching and communication, made new friends, and had a lot of fun (and snacks) along the way.”
— Izzy & Anna (Learning Guru & Mentee)
