LGS U14A hockey team have made school history by booking their place in the Ulster Hockey Stevenson Bowl Final for the first time ever, following a hard-fought semi-final victory over Omagh Academy.

Despite dominating large spells of possession throughout the match, LGS found Omagh Academy difficult to break down, with their opponents producing superb defensive organisation and several excellent saves to keep the score at 0-0 at full time. With nothing separating the teams, the tie was forced into penalty runs.

Under immense pressure, the LGS girls showed remarkable composure. Credit must go to the five penalty takers, who kept their nerve to step up and take a penalty run. Goals from Eve A, Sarah H and Faye N helped secure the lead, while the team’s outstanding goalkeeper produced crucial saves to seal a 3–1 shootout victory and send LGS through to a final.

Their road to the final has been impressive. LGS topped their group with convincing wins over Kilkeel, Carrick Grammar and Cookstown High School, before defeating Glenlola Collegiate 3–1 in a strong quarter-final performance. Throughout the competition, the squad has demonstrated maturity, work ethic, and a genuine togetherness that has carried them to this stage.

Speaking after the win, captain Faye N said:
“The team is so happy to have made it through to the final of the Stevenson Bowl. This is the first time any team from our school has made it this far, so it is really exciting. As a team I feel we are ready for the final and are composed and confident that we are going to do our best, play to the best of our ability and leave everything on the pitch.”

Coach Mrs Moore’s pride in the squad was equally clear:
“I am so proud of the girls and how they have conducted themselves throughout this entire competition to reach the final. Although we beat Cookstown in the group stages, they were very tough opponents and will undoubtedly be determined to put things right. Whatever happens, these girls have made their school extremely proud. I simply want them to enjoy the experience and show everyone what I see week in, week out – a very talented, hard-working group of players. Bring on the final.”

Mrs Moore also extended her thanks to everyone who has supported the girls on their journey, giving a special mention to Coach Netty and all the parents who have helped them get this far.

This special group, known for their hard work, strong squad depth, and willingness to learn, will now prepare for the Stevenson Bowl Final at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club on Wednesday 26th November at 12:30pm – an exciting occasion for both the players and the school.  All support is welcome.
