The early part of the U16 season saw the squad face three competitive fixtures, providing a strong test of character, skill, and team development. Each match offered valuable lessons and glimpses of the team’s potential as they continue to grow together.
The season opener against a strong Belfast High side was a tough test for the LGS U16s. Despite a committed defensive effort, Belfast HS dominated possession and territory, eventually running in four unanswered tries. Rory Dall stood out for his relentless work rate and determination in attack, earning him Player of the Match. While the result was disappointing, the match highlighted key areas for improvement, particularly in game management and physicality at the breakdown.
The team bounced back in style against Omagh Academy, putting together an impressive all-round performance. Strong running from the forwards laid the platform, with Jack and Graeme both finishing well-worked tries. The defence was organised and disciplined, and the backs showed great flair in open play. Graeme’s powerful carrying earned him a well-deserved Player of the Match award in a confident 28–10 win.
In a home fixture against Bangor Academy, LGS pushed their opponents right to the wire. Despite scoring three tries through Jack, Sam, and Alex, and a composed kicking display from Jack, Bangor edged the contest 24–20. Breaden and Noah shared Player of the Match honours for their impact across the park
While the results have been mixed, the LGS U16 squad has shown encouraging signs of progress. From a difficult opener to a dominant away win and a narrow home defeat, the team has demonstrated resilience, skill, and teamwork. With continued effort and belief, this squad has the potential to make a real mark as the season develops.
