Our squad kicked off their indoor training sessions before the Easter break, setting the stage for what promised to be an exciting campaign.
The season proper began with a challenging Cup fixture against a strong Lisneal side. Batting first, Lisneal posted a competitive 137 runs from their 20 overs. Our bowlers toiled hard, with Xander M. leading the attack, bagging 2 wickets for just 20 runs. In reply, our batsmen showed lots of grit against a disciplined Lisneal attack. Despite a commendable knock of 32 from Thomas F., we ultimately fell short, reaching 95 runs.

Undeterred, the team moved on to the Plate competition, facing Sullivan. And having reduced them to 26-5 in a mammoth effort, a key partnership of 75 helped Sullivan to 118. Vice-captain Josh M. was exceptional with the ball, picking up 2 wickets for only 15 runs. Unfortunately, our batting faltered once again, and we were bowled out short of the target in a disappointing effort.

The Saturday league fixtures proved to be a mixed bag, with a frustrating combination of rain and opposition teams conceding matches, limiting our playing opportunities. Despite these setbacks, the one league match we did manage to play showcased our potential. We skittled Ballymena, bowling them out for 58 runs! Jacob B. was the pick of the bowlers with an impressive 3 wickets for just 5 runs, ably supported by Xander M. who claimed 2 for 7.

The chase, however, proved to be another test of nerves. Our top order struggled to find rhythm, and we found ourselves reeling at 30-7. But it was in this moment a sensible and crucial 30-run partnership between Lewis A. and Xander M. guided us home, securing a hard-fought victory.

While it may have been a season with its share of challenges and “what ifs,” particularly for a squad brimming with talent, the potential within this group is undeniable. Many of these players are poised to become integral parts of the 1st XI in the coming years. Following this year’s group as their coach from Year 9, I will eagerly anticipate watching them develop into formidable cricketers for both school and their clubs.
