The Year 9 football team at Limavady Grammar School embarked on their first season in the Coleraine District League after returning from the Christmas break. With over 25 players attending training each week, enthusiasm and commitment were evident from the start. Despite never having played together before, the team quickly found their rhythm, forming a strong bond both on and off the pitch that would become the foundation for a remarkable campaign.
Their first test came away to Dominican, where nerves quickly turned to excitement as the team delivered a brilliant 4–2 victory. Jack announced himself in stunning fashion, scoring all four goals, while team captain Noah led with maturity and composure. It was a performance that set the tone for what was to come.
The next fixture saw the boys welcome Loreto to LGS in a confident home display. Once again, Jack was at the heart of the action, netting a second consecutive hat-trick as the team cruised to a 3–1 win. The momentum continued into their final group game, a highly anticipated local derby against St Mary’s. With top spot in the group on the line, the boys rose to the challenge. In a gritty, hard-fought match, Jack completed his third straight hat-trick to seal another 3–1 win and cement their place at the summit of the group table.
Progressing into the semi-finals, the team faced a familiar foe in Limavady High School. The first half was a struggle, with LGS fortunate to go into the break level at 0–0 after being put under intense pressure. However, the response after half time was nothing short of outstanding. Showing renewed energy and belief, the boys turned the match around with a dominant second-half performance. Evan scored twice, while Norrie and Jonah added to the tally in a memorable 4–0 victory that secured their place in the final.
The final, held at the Coleraine Showgrounds, was a tense and dramatic encounter as the boys once again faced Loreto. With nerves on both sides, the football was scrappy and both teams found it difficult to settle into a rhythm, but it was Jack who struck first, capitalising on a mistake by the opposition goalkeeper to give LGS the lead. Loreto responded with a late equaliser, and just as extra time loomed, Norrie stepped up with a moment of brilliance. With only two minutes remaining, he struck a stunning goal from outside the box – a thunderous effort that any professional would be proud of – to win the match and crown LGS champions.
It was a dream debut season for the Year 9s, finishing with five wins from five matches, a league title, and a perfect record. Jack’s goal-scoring heroics were unforgettable, while captain Noah’s leadership and Norrie’s engine all played vital roles.
With the Northern Ireland Cup on the horizon next season and defending their Coleraine District League title, expectations are high – but if this year has shown anything, it’s that this group thrives under challenge.
