Every Thursday afternoon from 3:30pm to 4:30pm, our school’s Sign Language Club brought students together in a unique and inspiring way. The club provided an opportunity not only to learn British Sign Language (BSL), but also to build awareness and appreciation for the Deaf community.

One of the highlights of the club was a visit from a special guest – a lady who is Deaf and the auntie of one of our students. Her presence added something truly special to our sessions. She generously signed with us, helping us to practise our new skills and giving us a real-life example of how sign language is used in everyday life.

We were also incredibly fortunate to have the guidance of our staff member, Mrs. Martina Bradley. Her deep personal connection to the Deaf community through her husband Paddy, brought a wealth of experience and a personal touch to our club. Her stories and insights into the world of sign language made learning not only educational, but meaningful. Mrs. Bradley’s passion for inclusion and communication was inspiring for all of us. In addition, we have staff member, Miss Bronagh McLaughlin, who holds a Level 6 qualification in British Sign Language.

During our time together, we learnt basic BSL including fingerspelling, greetings, colours, and everyday phrases. We also explored deaf awareness – learning about communication tips, the use of facial expressions, and how to be respectful and inclusive toward those who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

At Christmas, we introduced the Sign Language choir! We spent several weeks learning to sign Christmas carols. The choir performed some of our favourite Christmas songs, signing to classics like “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night”. It was a heartwarming and memorable experience for everyone involved.

But it wasn’t all lessons and learning -we had plenty of fun too! Through interactive games and group activities, we put our signing into practice in creative and playful ways. These sessions helped to build confidence, friendships, and a deeper understanding of the importance of communication in all its forms.

The Sign Language Club is more than just an after-school activity- it was a step toward building a more inclusive and empathetic school community. We look forward to continuing our journey through the Sign Language Club in the next academic year.
