The U18 football squad kicked off the 2024/25 season with a challenging fixture in the NI Schools’ Cup, drawing none other than St Joseph’s, Derry – a team that would go on to win the entire tournament. With a number of senior players unavailable, our squad faced a stern test. Despite this, the team held their own admirably in the first half, keeping the score at 0-0 through some brave defending. However, the second half saw St Joe’s exploit the gaps and find the net twice. The final score of 2-0 doesn’t fully reflect our competitive performance, and the fact that we held the eventual champions for so long is a testament to the quality and determination of our squad.

NI Plate Journey: Goals, Grit & Drama

Shifting focus to the NI Plate, our U18s bounced back in style with a commanding win over Antrim Grammar School. Hat Tricks from Corey and Finlay lit up the scoreboard, with Rudy also getting on the scoresheet in a comprehensive team performance. Special mention goes to our midfield dynamos Ben and Callum.

Next up was St Colm’s, Draperstown – a match that had everything. Goals from Callum S and Finlay saw us lead twice, but a late equaliser from St Colm’s in the dying seconds pushed the game into penalties. A tactical goalkeeper substitution saw Dara step into the spotlight and make two vital saves. Calmly converted spot-kicks from Corey, Zac, and Rudy secured our spot in the last sixteen.

In the next round, we faced Slemish College. Though it was a scrappy game overall, the difference was our defence, with the two Zachs who throughout the game were composed and quashed any attacking threats. Finlay stepped up once again, and his two goals helped secure a 2-1 win against a well-drilled side, taking us into the quarter-finals.

Quarter-Final Heartbreak

Our cup journey came to a dramatic end in the quarter-finals against Abbey Grammar School. Despite a slow start, we took the lead thanks to Finlay, whose blistering pace down the wing and composed finish put us 1-0 up. However, a lapse in concentration allowed Abbey to equalise, and the game was finely balanced. Sadly, a serious injury to our key winger, Rudy – a dislocated knee – brought normal time to an early end, and both teams agreed to settle the match with a penalty shootout.

Despite a strong tournament run, the shootout proved too much for our nerves, and we bowed out of the competition in heartbreaking fashion.
While the season didn’t end with silverware, the U18s showed they can compete at the highest level. From holding the eventual NI Cup winners to going deep into the NI Plate, this campaign was marked by moments of brilliance, resilience, and incredible team spirit. Well done to all the players and coaching staff on a memorable season. We look forward to seeing what this talented group achieves next year.
