On the 19th of June, we had the privilege of taking seven Year 13 students to Manchester to present their research at the prestigious IRIS Conference. Their project focused on innovative methods to treat blue-green algae in Lough Neagh—an issue of growing environmental concern. In front of an audience of over 300, including academics, researchers, and peers, our students confidently shared their findings and responded to challenging questions with professionalism and insight.
We were the only school from Northern Ireland represented at the conference, making this a particularly proud moment. Opportunities like this are invaluable for our students. They not only deepen their understanding of real-world scientific issues but also develop essential skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration. Engaging directly with experts and peers in a professional setting helps build confidence and inspires future academic and career aspirations.
The experience also highlighted the importance of student-led research and the role young people can play in addressing environmental challenges. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful to IRIS for providing such a platform. This was more than just a conference—it was a transformative experience that will stay with our students for years to come.
