On Thursday the 29th of August, Limavady Grammar School held their annual “University Road Show” event for Years 13 to 14. This brilliant initiative involved a series of presentations, given by individuals representing the following universities ‘overseas’ in the UK; University of Stirling, Edge Hill University, Northumbria University, University of Newcastle, Glasgow Caledonian University, York St John university, University of Dundee and the University of Cumbria.
By visiting more places, universities can gain a higher audience and cater to pupils who may be unable to visit the faculties in person. The event also involved interactive sessions and opportunities with interactions with the faculty and admission staff. The duration of the event was 2 hours and was designed to demystify the university application process for students, by allowing higher education providers to interact with year 13 and year 14 pupils.
The ER+M team gave a short 30 minute presentation of university life and the process of applying to university. The next 90 minutes allowed pupils to circulate and ‘mingle’ with the admissions staff and representatives by which students were given various promotional material and leaflets regarding university life. After all, the next road they’ll take on their educational career is crucial for shaping their future.
The pupils were able to learn about specific programs, research organisations, extra curricular activities and general campus life from the university representatives. This aided the pupils to feel more prepared and content as they navigate their academic journey. In addition, this provided them with insight into the community that they could be a part of too.
Overall, the event was a success allowing connections to be fostered by students and the university. It is an invaluable experience for students considering higher education in the nearby future.
