The Under 14s enjoyed a mixed season, which included a number of players playing a crucial role for the Medallion Team. The side had strong victories over local rivals Dalriada, Foyle and Coleraine, amongst defeats to Omagh, Belfast HS and Ballyclare on the road. They also achieved the double over Banbridge Academy, home and away, before an unfortunate defeat before Christmas to Belfast HS, playing on the main pitch for the first time.

Matthew L captained the team once again, and was rewarded for his performances throughout the season, along with Alex M, with a place in the Ulster Rugby U16 Summer Programme. Charlie B, Callum M, Joseph M and Rory D, also formed part of the Ulster Rugby Regional North Squad throughout the season, gaining valuable experience and skill.

The team has become a fairly settled side, with the whole squad capable of performing when required. In selection, Mr Dunlop spent time experimenting with the centre combination, as Matthew L partnered the dependable Ewan B in the midfield. However, after the Medallion Shield campaign, it was clear the captain was most effective playing in the back row.  This allowed Matthew R to move out of the pack, impressing in his first few games in the backs.

We were delighted to see Arran H return to rugby this year, after injury ruled him out the previous season. His workrate and tackle technique meant he regularly joined Joseph M in the back row. Alex M was also another to join the squad this season, and after a time in the back row, settled into the front row providing a powerful platform for the team to play from. Alfie B and Lorcan S, along with Thomas M and Thomas F, completed the front row, doing a lot of the hard work at the breakdown throughout the season.

The Most Improved Player of the Season award went to William McL, who shared the Hooking duties. His iconic ‘mullet’ and statue often caught oppositions off guard, as he stole numerous hooks against the head. With selection settling, the skillful Lewis A found himself moving into the second row, often partnering the powerful Rory D. Rowan L and Jack W never put a foot wrong when taking their positions in the pack.

At half back, Caleb M and Charlie B have formed a useful combination. Caleb’s passing and improving kick game have allowed everyone to play around him, while Charlie continues to grow in his ability to manage the team from 10. Unfortunately, Charlie missed much of the first half of the season due to an injury, so regular full back, Callum M, was given an opportunity to develop another aspect of his game, in a different numbered jersey!

Toby B and Finlay S made the wing jerseys their own this year, with Finlay developing his footwork, and Toby strong on the ground. Jack H was often called upon at 9, but also filled in admirably at full back on a number of occasions.
