This was a hugely successful year for the Medallion Rugby squad, who throughout junior years had struggled to form a team to fulfil regular Saturday fixtures. A number of the boys in the team began the year increasing in confidence and ability though the under 16s campaign, particularly squad captain, Greame Rosborough.

As the Medallion Shield campaign approached, the Year 11 boys joined forces with Mr Dunlop’s Under 14 squad to form the Medallion Training Squad. This was a really positive step as a number of new players were encouraged to join and it created a competitive training environment. This newly formed squad, who hadn’t won a competitive game in the first three years of school, was delighted when they stormed to victory over Strabane. This result was the encouragement that they needed before the first round of the shield.

In wet and muddy conditions the LGS squad came out of the blocks fired up for their first competition fixture. They were facing Ballymoney High School, a side who had defeated them only a few weeks ago. First half tries from Year 10’s Matthew Laird and Lewis Alcock built confidence for the side, before captain Graeme Rosborough crossed twice to build an early lead. Ballymoney struck back before half time, bringing the score to 24-7.  The second half was all about the defence, with Matthew Laird, Luke Fleming, Jack Howe and Cailean Gallagher all putting in solid hits! There would be no further scores, with Callum Meighan’s superb last ditch tackle bringing the game to an end!

After a confidence building win in the preliminary round, the Medallions were a bit slower to start against Ballyclare Secondary School in round two. As the game progressed, the confidence returned, as captain Graeme Rosborough crossed for a first half try to give the home side the lead. After the break, U14 captain Matthew Laird secured the victory with the second try!

The reward was the long trip to Enniskillen Royal Grammar School after the Christmas break for the third round. This was to be a step too far, as the well conditioned and organised Enniskillen team put Limavady to the sword. However, the boys were pleased to get another game under their belt, with the squad depth tested due to some unavailability.

This defeat placed the Squad in the Bowl competition and were drawn against Friends School, Lisburn, at home. After a promising start, where they rattled the Lisburn side, Friends’ power and experience proved too much, as they brought the Grammar’s campaign to a close.
