This year’s 2nds rugby has been a year of close victories, thrilling comebacks, shoulder injuries and most importantly enjoyment. The numerous players who ran out in the blue and white of Limavady Grammar to represent the 2nd Fifteen can all stand proud of their performances, their teamwork and their commitment. Every young man has been a pleasure to coach each adding to the team in their own individual way. Led from the front, for the second consecutive year, by David who not only progressed as a player but proved himself as a charismatic and compassionate leader, attributes that will carry him forward in whatever challenges he faces after leaving school. Leaving with him are Freddie, Arlen, Leo, Ethan, Daniel, Jamie and Fintan which will leave a hole in 2nds rugby that will be hard to fill. Each of these players will be missed both on and off the pitch. This is the nature of Schools Rugby with players from the years below stepping into these big shoes.
The 2nds season was shorter than either the players or I hoped with only 3 competitive games, however the commitment of every player who turned up to train and play through blazing sun, pouring rain, snow and ice was obvious for all to see. Even after their competitive season was over these players turned in to assist the 1st Fifteen, push for places in that team or just to provide support. Limavady Grammar Rugby was lucky to have them.
The Competitive season started in the cup with a hard defeat to Rainey, always a difficult place to go, putting the team into the Trophy where they met Dalriada. An excellent team performance achieved a 20-19 victory in a nip and tuck match with tries from Ethan and Daniel. Next came a difficult home draw against local rivals Coleraine Grammar. On a bright Wednesday in December the two sides clashed, Limavady started badly, and Coleraine took a commanding lead. Mackenzie was having the game of his life and was on track for Player of the Match when a mistimed tackle left him with a dislocated shoulder ending his season. After some tactical and positional changes Limavady rallied, behind the consistently excellent Kaleb, and staged a comeback but they had left themselves with too much of a mountain to climb and the game ended with a 35-29 loss. Tries scored by David, James and Jack.
I would like to thank Mr. Hughes and Mr. Lemon for all their work this year, but mostly I would like to thank the players. Whether they played for a minute or every minute of every match their commitment, energy and enjoyment is what keeps me coming back.
