At the beginning of February, two classmates and myself were selected during the shortlisting process by Terex to represent Limavady Grammar School. We were tasked to design a new workwear for woman in the industry which was a more comfortable fit for the female form. Over 40 students took part from various schools in County Londonderry and only a few were selected for the final stage. We had to produce different designs with detail and colour, as well as writing a description on the fitting and health and safety for each item and showcasing our designs using mood boards.
The Terex Company invited us to their office for us to present our designs to their board in person. That morning we travelled to Terex with our art teacher Mrs Olphert and when we arrived, we were greeted in a very welcoming manner by the staff. First, we waited for the other schools to arrive, before receiving safety equipment as we were treated to a tour of the manufacturing warehouse. It was very noisy but also interesting to see how they built the machines. We were so surprised by the sheer size and mass of the equipment that Terex manufacture. We got to take pictures of the machines and when we were done, we went back into the meeting room as our school was first to present to the Terex employees. One at a time we presented our ideas and at the end we got a photo with Terex. When it was time to leave, we were given free hats, pens as well and some snacks for our journey back to school.
Overall, my classmates and I are very grateful to have been given this opportunity and we had such a good time, it was very enjoyable and an experience that we will remember.
